I was invited to share Sunny Smog Digs Permafrost in VR at the European Conference on Permafrost in June 2023. As an artist with this idea to connect and teach kids more about what scientists do, I was humbled to meet and learn from so many inspiring humans who DIG deep into their fields to try and understand how this world works. Did you know that the study of lakes is called “limnology” or that studying soil, you know the dirt beneath our feet, can lead to a life full of interest? Or that people who live on/near permafrost are experiencing food insecurity because their underground food storage caches(nature’s freezer) are thawing? And sciences like Geochemistry and Hydrology help those most affected. Scientists supporting people…awesome!
The curiosity these folks base their rigor on is so inspiring. My hope is to help them to find ways to communicate their science to lay people but also (maybe more importantly) communicate to kids that they too can live a life full of engagement, like these scientists, based on their own curiosity!
